Izzy
Cooper and I move to opposite ends of the cottage as we both answer. I donât know about him, but Iâm hoping and praying that what the detective has to say is good news.
âDetective,â I say by way of a greeting.
âIzzy, how are you?â he asks.
âIâve been better, if I'm honest. Have you found anything out?"
"I have," he says, and I don't like the pause and silence that follows. I immediately know it's not good news. I turn to Cooper and find him already watching me.
"It's the same people, isn't it?" I say, my eyes locked on Cooper as he continues his conversation.
"I'm sorry, Izzy, but yes, we believe it's Curtis Langley."
I release a deep sigh and lean back against the wall. I can tell by Cooper's stance that he's just been told the same thing. He has one arm up, his hand flat against the wall, and he's looking down at the floor. Even in the brief time I've known him, I can tell he's wound up as tight as a spring. The tension is practically come off him in waves.
"So, what's the next move?" I ask, hoping and praying we don't have to relocate again. I want to go home, yes, but I'm almost used to what we have now. I fear that doing it all again will be too much to take.
"While we know Curtis Langley hit that bank, we have no evidence that he knows your whereabouts. Right now, the only thing we're doing is increasing the officers we have watching you, and we want to increase the number of times you check in with your handlers. That's all we're changing for now, Izzy, but we need you and Cooper to keep your eyes open. We don't think Langley is still in the area, but you can never be too careful."
"Understood. Detective, do you think we'll have to move again?" I ask him, knowing it's a possibility.
"We want to avoid that, Izzy. We will only move you if the situation becomes one where your lives are at risk." He pauses again, and I see Cooper has ended his phone call. "I promise you we will let you know if we get any indication that he knows where you are."
"Thank you, Detective."
I end the call, my eyes still fixed on Cooper. His hands are on his hips and he's facing the window. It looks like he's taking the news hard, as the tension in his back and shoulders is clear. All I can think to do is go over to him, consequences be damned.
Putting my phone down, I close the short distance between us in just a few steps. He doesn't turn, but when I put my hand on his back, his body jerks before quickly relaxing. Cooper lets his head drop forward, and he releases a long exhale.
"I don't think I can do all this again, Izzy," he says, his back still to me. "It was hard enough the first time. I can't do it again."
"I feel the same," I tell him, and he angles his head slightly in my direction.
